"2 counties to halt all weddings, gay or not," the headline I read over Rick's shoulder said.
"Is one of them Kern!?" I asked excitedly, skimming ahead; "Of course it is."
"Due to lack of resources?" Rick muttered; "That's a pretty flimsy argument."
"I think I'd go right past 'flimsy' and clear on to 'transparent.' I know a judge can't say 'I reject your argument because you're Kern County,' but, well, it's true."
Seeing Mexican Immigration clearly - A nice article on Mexican immigration; a lot of great underreported facts, and I especially like that he refers to it as "undocumented migration" throughout the article.
Having happily ignored my car for the better part of the last two months, this morning's $45 tank of gas was a bit of a shock. And though I was already thinking about selling my car, it's not so much the price of gas that I feel pushing me over the edge, as it is the laserlike focus from both sides of the aisle on "gas relief." I'm pretty happy with my train and my bus, and I think other people would be too.

Flash animation: The End of the World - "Ruling out the ice caps melting, meteors becoming crashed into us, the ozone layer leaving, and the sun exploding, we're definitely going to blow ourselves up." This is a pretty hilarious flash animation with a lot of great quotables.

Senate votes to freeze pay raise this year - If we just gave all of our elected officials a whack of cash (and made rules so they wouldn't have an unfair funding advantage as incumbants), I can't help but wonder how much of a damper that would put on the lobbying industry.

Blink. I almost completely overlooked this because of everything else going on, but wow. State senate OKs bill legalizing same-sex marriage / Measure faces uphill battle in the Assembly.
Of course, it still needs to get through the assembly. If you live somewhere in California besides the Bay Area (and even then), now seems like a good time to call your representative in the assembly.

"Bush urges nation to remember 9/11" Oh yeah, 9/11... Wasn't that the thing that that Osama bin Laden guy was blamed for? Say, whatever happened to that guy, anyway?
Senate filibuster showdown averted / COMPROMISE: 14 senators craft agreement to allow vote on some judicial nominees
I heard the news on the radio while driving home, and it was the best thing I'd heard out of Washington in a long time. The scary question is: how many more situations like this will arise in the next four years where one outcome will result in such utter relief while the other outcome would be as unimaginably terrible?

Remember when we used to have those "presidential veto" things? Yeah, those were cool.
British Elections - So were you still up for Galloway?
I heard this interview with George Galloway the other night in which Jeremy Paxman asked Galloway "Are you proud of having got rid of one of the very few black women in Parliament?" Suffice it to say, my politically correct mid-90s upbringing didn't train me to even know where to start reasoning about this question.
