The PowerBook Mess

So remember that great PowerBook G3 I was telling you I got? Welll... I mailed the guy my check, and the guy was getting ready to ship it, and he noticed that the specs of 'book he was about didn't match the ship I paid for. So he informed me, and I had him send my check back.

Fraggibit. You see, he was selling four 'books for his friend, and his friend said they were all the same model. Thus, this guy advertised them as all being the same. And I just drew the short straw, it would appear.

And now I don't know what I'm going to do for computing over winter break. I might try to kick start the PB 190 into working, though I also get the hunch that I'll occasionally be taking Dorfl back and forth a couple of times for recreational purposes. That is, LAN parties. Mm... LAN Parties. Quake 3, Freespace 2, X-Wing Alliance, Half Life, Tiberian Sun, Myth II, Mechwarrior 3, you name it. It's going to kick some ass.

Winter Computing

So I ordered a used PowerBook for winter break. After break, I'll be selling it to Lang. I'm sure it will serve me well.

It's a PowerBook G3 Series. Not one of those new ones with the bronze keyboard, but the thicker heavier ones from before that. It packs a G3 266, 64 megs of RAM, a 4 gig Hard Drive, a built in modem and Ethernet, a 14.1" screen, two speakers, and things which I'm forgetting to mention. For this, I'm paying $1750. That's only $150 more than an iBook, and I'm getting 32 more megs of RAM, another gig of hard drive space, a larger screen, and a better looking case. Sounds like a fair deal to me.

So that machine, which I've dubbed Twoflower, will be my portable computing over the break. It'll travel with me as I travel between Bakersfield and Kernville and Wofford Heights and Lake Isabella and wherever else I might wander.

Other than that, I'll hopefully be able to take hex home over the break, and maybe I'll be able to take Dorfl home, too, to play games on. I'll have to take Vimes home, because I'm going to try to sell him, if I can get a decent price. *sniff* Vimes has been good to me, but I don't use the old man very much these days, though he's still perfectly capable.

Yes, each of my computers earned it's name.

The new PowerBook is to be Twoflower, as it'll have seen most of the United States by the time it gets to me, and it'll see even more of it by the time I'm through.

The Speed of Technology

So for that PowerBook G3, I'm paying $1750. When that PowerBook first came out around a year and a half ago, it cost $3499. After a year and a half, half price! That's scary, and yet cool at the same time.
