Bedazzling in Red

Bedazzled may just have been an excuse to make sure that Liz Hurley was hot... Not hot in the fire and brimstone kind of way -- but rather, hot in the red leather... well, red ANYTHING kind of way. "Yeah", the director said... "Keep the red coming... Yeah baby, red, yeah..." (No, Mike Myers wasn't the director. But you know he wishes he was. You know you wish you were, too.)

Even though that was just about all the movie was, I don't mind too much. Sure, the geek doesn't end up with the hot devil, but the devil was hot WHILE the geek didn't end up with her, so it all worked out.

Oh, as far as the plot goes... Well, it's just a series of punch lines. Some of them are better than others, but they're all just kind of average. The best parts of the movie are the parts with Liz Hurley. I'd say you should wait for the DVD so you can liberally skip the parts that drag, and then this movie would probably be pretty great.

Ever After, All Is Mended, and Not Just For Today

Last night, after a slight annoyance with no video store having the movies we wanted to rent until we finally made it to Reel and picked up two movies, including Ever After. I expect that this one was out at Blockbuster on Shattuck because it features Drew Barrymore, star of Charlie's Angels.

So movies in hand, we watched this tale of romance and so on. It was good and enjoyable. There are only two real reasons I can think of that someone wouldn't like this movie: One is that if you're anal about things like historical accuracy, the anachronisms in this movie will probably drive you batty. The other is that this movie makes the story of Cinderella quite a bit more complicated, though not nearly as complicated as Pratchett made the tale of Ember-ella in Witches Abroad.

Oh, and don't let the French peasants (and courtiers, for that matter) speaking with proper English accents bother you. That's really how it was. Honest.

They’re Charlie’s Angels

Last night a group of us went out to see Charlie's Angels, and it was pretty good. We had someone buy a lot of tickets at lunch time, so we weren't worried about getting there early. Instead, we went to El Torito and had dinner, and then went and got into a pretty long line. By the time we got to the front of the line, we discovered that the stupid theater had way oversold how many tickets they had, and there were no seats left. We were presented with the option of a free pass, free drink, free popcorn, and sitting on the floor, or the option of free pass, and 11:45 showing. Since one among us was a huge Lucy Liu fan and had been dying to see this movie for weeks, we sat down on the concrete. It should probably be noted that this was around 9:30...

I'd been pretty excited about seeing this movie, because, well, it seemed to have everything. Girls, Race Cars, Bill Murry in a mustache... Everything!

During the movie last night I thought of things I was going to say about it, but I've forgotten them now. The girls looked good, that's for sure. The fighting was no Jackie Chan, but it managed to be entertaining, even when it was making fun of itself. There was slightly excessive matrix-esque slow motion at times, but I was able to tolerate that. There were good looking girls.

I'd probably give it a 3/5, which is the same as I'd give X-Men or most other hugely hyped movies. It was entertaining, and I'd recommend seeing it, but don't expect perfection.
