Yesterday, I woke up at 8 am, picked up a uhaul, helped one of my roommates move a load and a half of furniture, then fit almost all of my stuff into two uhaul trips, and then helped Trisha move her furniture in one more load. We finished that last load at nearly 1 am. And I did all of that on three hours of sleep, because I was up until 5 am the night before packing. Needless to say, I'm exhausted.
While the worst is more or less over, there's still so much left to do. I have a carload or so left at the old apartment, and I have to throw away everything else that's left there by Saturday at 2:30. I have a ton of boxes to move from the second floor of the new house to my third floor room. And then I have to sort out my stuff and start selling everything. The worst is over, but the work has only just begun.
And now, back to the house, where there's no 'net.
Discussion and Citation in the Blogosphere...
This article was somewhat interesting, but it didn't seem particularly profound. I also read most of the articles this article links. I kind of felt like there should be a meta-article written about the article, though. As it was, it felt like the author ignored how what he was saying was just another example of what he was describing.
Longhorn goes to pieces
Huh, Microsoft's making Longhorn more Modular? Huh, what a novel idea![/deadpan]
Windows Server 2003 as a Workstation: Great, But Not Unconditionally
The author said "However, my curiosity about OSes drove me...," and its because of my curiosity about OSes that I find this article interesting. A pretty good review of Win2k3 server-as-a-workstation. One thing I did find interesting was that, according to the article, the cheapest option for acquiring Windows Server 2003 is $800, and that's only a 5-client version that probably only runs on a limited number of processors. In contrast, full price for Mac OS X Server with unlimited clients is only $1000. Who has a monopoly again?
eBay Listings: School Yearbooks
I jokingly suggested to Kevin that I might try to sell my yearbooks on eBay, only to discover (with a bit of horror) that not only does eBay have a separate category for "School Yearbooks," and not only are a lot of people trying to sell yearbooks on eBay, but some of them actually have bids on them. I have no idea what to make of this, honestly.
While moving later this week is going to suck more than the last few times I've done it, there is one thing that I'm actually looking forward to this time: While before I've always waited until the last possible minute to pack my computer(s), this time it won't matter. Thanks to only having a laptop at this point, when I'm finally ready to make the final transition, I'll just shut the lid and toss it in my backpack. I probably won't even turn it off. I really can't imagine going back to a desktop for any reason at this point.
Saw: Bruce Almighty
Saw Bruce Almighty today, and I was less than impressed. I can count the number of times I laughed on one (possibly seven-fingered) hand, and it got to be as sweet as Pepsi near the end. 2/5.
Buffy Postmortem: Is Spike Dead?
This is a good interview with Joss about the end of Buffy, and it shed some light on some things for me. Yay Spike on Angel.
It's actually been an embarrassingly Buffy week, to the point that when I saw Lauren use line "Where do we go from here the words are coming out all weird..." my first though was "Wait, that's not how "Where Do We Go From Here?" goes." Of course, it is how The Bends goes, but it took me longer than it should have to figure that out.
What made this week any more Buffy than normal, besides the obvious? Let's see:
- Monday: Rewatched the last two episodes of Buffy, in preparation for the finale on Tuesday.
- Tuesday: Participated in a public display of Buffy geekdom: Went to the Parkway and watched the finale while drinking beer and eating pizza. And they showed Once More With Feeling afterwards, which was awesome.
- Wednesday: Buffy free. Well, except for all of the conversations about the Buffy finale.
- Thursday: Saw Ghost of the Robot (James Marsters' (aka Spike) band) at the Great American Music Hall. It was fairly fun, and the music was fine, though nothing fantastic. Unsurprisingly, it was approximately five girls to every one guy, and the collective squeal that went up when James came on stage was just as predictable. It was kind of surreal seeing him in person like that. He was actually shy on stage, in a strangely endearing way that even I thought was kind of cute. All things considered, he handled a crowd full of people who obviously had huge crushes on him relatively gracefully.
- Friday: Spent awhile at Amoeba deciding not to buy the Once More With Feeling soundtrack before going home and watching two episodes of 4th season that my TiVo picked up.
So, yeah. Buffy overdose.
How cell phones are changing our social habits
The one thing that I felt was missing was discussion of perceptions of cell phone users by those without cell phones.
